The Perpetual, 2010
Country: UK
Director: Tereza Stehlíková
Score: Robin Rimbaud aka Scanner
Running time (in minutes): 23.34

The Perpetual is drawn from Mount Analogue, the influential novel of spiritual enquiry by the iconic French writer René Daumal, which was left unfinished by his death. Offering an account of an expedition in search of a sensed but unseen continent, it provides a richly rewarding allegory of the spiritual quest.

Its core premise – of a parallel reality, existing just beyond our reach – has provided the foundation for my filmic exploration of archetypal landscapes where, through a shift in context via the introduction of a framing narrative, I am attempting to alter the audience’s perception of existing geographies. This intention seeks to embody the Jungian idea that the metaphysical is matter seen ‘from within’.
